Make a Pumpkin Bird Feeder

About the Challenge

Have a pumpkin you are not sure what to do with? Make a bird feeder! Bring a seasonal touch outside while helping feed local wildlife.  


Items Needed



  1. A pumpkin  
  2. Bird seed  
  3. Twine/Rope  
  4. Tape  


Challenge Directions


1. Cut top of pumpkin off and scoop out the insides  

2. Cut twine to begin making macrame base for feeder  

A. Cut four sections of twine, each section being 4-foots length of twine  

B. Line up the strings so they are even, then fold all four pieces in half.  

  

C. Tie an overhand knot 2 inches down from the bend (where you folded it in half). This will form a loop.  

3. Separate twine to form macrame basket  

A. Tape the top of the loop down onto a flat surface.  

  

B. Separate the twine into sets of two strings. Tie a knot at each of the sections about 8 inches down from the top knot.  

4. Tie the macrame braids  

A. Grab a string from one set of strings and then one of the strings from the neighboring side.  

 B. Tie a knot in them directly between the two upper knots.    

C. Repeat this with the other sets of strings. Tape down each section, if needed.  

5. Create basket  

A. Tie remaining strings to form your basket  

6. Now all that is left is to fill your feeder with bird seed and hang it up!  

7. Snap a picture of your feeder to upload in the "Share Your Results" form  

8. Complete a "Share Your Results" form to earn your challenge points.
